Beyond ‘do no harm’? On the need for a dynamic approach to research ethics

Despite ongoing critical engagements with the remit and functioning of research ethics boards review processes – not least in limitations transposing medico-scientific approaches to social sciences need for ethical practice is well established accepted. Consequently, we see ubiquitous requirement academic science whether by an undergraduate student, a PhD candidate, or professor undergo review. (or perhaps because of) this ubiquity expectation, engagement often remains perfunctory, formulaic, procedural. Too reduced bureaucratic hurdle, singular moment approval that overlooks dynamic, messy, complex realities journey. Moreover, reductionist approach replicated teaching training reinforced as duties are subsumed into general administrative burden life. How, then, might move beyond procedural static substantive dynamic process? Building on existing debates, set out number possible strategies realising aim only individual but linked institutional set-up management review, opportunities promoting manner.
